๐ I'm an internationally educated nurse

1 ยท Prepare
Set yourself up before spending a cent.
- 1
Choose the state you'll apply in
Your RN license is issued by one state's Board of Nursing. Requirements, fees, and processing times differ โ pick the state that fits your situation first.
๐ก Many international nurses choose states with no CGFNS requirement and faster processing.
Browse all 50 state guides โ - 2
Gather your documents
Collect everything the board will ask for now, so nothing stalls your application later. Missing transcripts and verifications are the #1 cause of delays.
๐ก Make sure your name is identical across every document and your ID โ mismatches cause rejections.
- 3
Get your credentials evaluated
InternationalIf your board requires it, an agency like CGFNS verifies that your nursing education is comparable to a U.S. program. Start this early โ it can take weeks.
๐ต ~$385+โฑ๏ธ 4โ12 weeks - 4
Take an English proficiency exam
InternationalMost boards require proof of English proficiency for internationally educated nurses, typically IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT (unless you're exempt).
๐ต ~$200โ$250
2 ยท Apply
Submit to the board and register to test.
- 1
Apply to the Board of Nursing
Create an account with your chosen state board and complete the application for licensure by examination (RN). Pay the state application fee.
๐ต ~$40โ$350 (varies by state) - 2
Send your school documents to the board
Request that your nursing school send an official transcript directly to the board. International nurses may also need home-country license verification.
๐ก Documents sent directly from the institution are accepted โ copies you forward yourself usually aren't.
- 3
Complete fingerprinting & background check
Many states require a fingerprint-based criminal background check. Do this as soon as the board tells you how (often a Livescan vendor).
๐ต ~$50โ$80 - 4
Register with Pearson VUE
Register for the NCLEX-RN at Pearson VUE and pay the registration fee. The name on your registration must exactly match your ID.
๐ต $200
3 ยท Test
Get authorized, schedule, and pass.
- 1
Receive your Authorization to Test (ATT)
Once the board confirms eligibility and Pearson VUE processes your registration, you'll get an ATT email. It's valid for a limited window โ usually about 90 days.
๐ก If your ATT expires before you test, you'll have to re-register and pay again.
- 2
Schedule your NCLEX
Use your ATT to book the exam at a Pearson VUE testing center. International candidates can test at approved centers worldwide.
๐ก Filipino nurses can take the NCLEX in Metro Manila (Makati or Alabang) โ no need to fly to the U.S. See exam locations on our Filipino nurses guide.

Prepare and take the exam
The NCLEX-RN uses Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) and includes Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) clinical-judgment items. Arrive 30 minutes early with your ID.
4 ยท Get Licensed
Pass, get your license, and (if needed) your visa.
- 1
Receive your results & license
After you pass, your state board issues your RN license. You can verify it on Nursys once it's active.
- 2
Complete immigration / VisaScreen
InternationalIf you plan to work in the U.S. on a visa (e.g., EB-3), you'll typically need a VisaScreen certificate. Start once you're licensed.
Your progress is saved in this browser only. Requirements and fees change often โ always confirm details with the official Board of Nursing before applying.
